THE IRAQ DISASTER
by Gary Granneman, editor
As of this writing:
  • 2529 coalition soldiers and over 40,000 Iraqi citizens have been killed in the Iraq war.
  • 18,356 coalition soldiers and an unknown number of Iraqi citizens have been injured. Many of them have permanent injuries.
  • The United States government has spent $432 billion dollars.

War cannot be won without a mature and thoughtful strategy, neither can the peace. The Bush blunders in Iraq have caused global devastation. He has missed the mark on each of his stated objectives.

    * Rather than reducing the terrorists threat, he has significantly increased it. By detaining people without just cause, failing to properly control prisons, ignoring the Geneva convention, and failing to build a peace in Iraq he has increased the anger toward the US. Terrorists are created in this process. The actions of this administration are responsible for dramtically increasing the terroist population. He has failed to meet his primary objective.
    * Many statesmen, retired military, and consultants pleaded with the Bush administration to have an effective plan for reconstrutions. Senator Richard Lugar (Republican of Indiana) repeatedly petitioned the president to address this issue vigorously. Bush's stated objective of building a democracy in Iraq that would entice citizens of Iraq's neighbors has failed. There can be few people in the region envious of Iraq.
    * Since terrorists function as individuals making the US borders secure is the primary defense against terrorism. As we saw on 9/11 it takes only a few terrorists to create a disaster. Bush has done nothing to stem the flow of unidentified people into the US. Instead, billions have been spent in Afganistan and Iraq.
