DANGERS FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS
Illegal immigration into the US becomes deadly for some of immigrants and miserable for many more. Those who survive are often blackmailed or sold into virtual slavery. Illegal immigrants from Mexico who are smuggled in are typically charged more than $1,000. They are often paid less than $5 a day.
If they survive the trip, they are often held hostage while their families are blackmailed for additional funds. Boys and girls often become sex slaves, chained to their beds and murdered if they try to escape. Those who condone illegal immigration have opened the door to a return of slavery to the US. With no controls on immigration, illegal immigrants are often the ultimate victims of the system. Undocumented people cannot be protected from abuse. Historically, immigrants have been the primary victims of immigrant gangs.
UNEMPLOYMENT
At the time of this writing there are over 7,500,000 unemployed Americans who are actively seeking jobs, many of which are taken by the more than 12,000,000 alliens currently in the United States. Our brilliant politicians have established a minimum wage of $5.15 and hour, which becomes approximately $50 a day with various government fees. Minimum wage jobs go to illegal immigrants who will do them for $2 a day. Is the problem really that Americans are lazy and don't want to work as defenders of illegal immigration say?
The facts are:
-Companies will have problems with the federal government if they pay less than minimum wage to citizens or legal immigrants.
-The federal government does not actively enforce laws against hiring illegal immigrants for well under the minimum wage.
-Illegal immigrants live in squalid conditions, often 4 or more to a room supported by churches and other organizations. If Americans worked for $2 a day they would be homeless. Are Americans not willing to take these jobs? Are Americans not willing to work for $2 a day? Are Americans not offered these jobs because of minimum wage? Minimum wage does not guarantee that Americans will have a minimum income when others work for less. It guarantees that millions of Americans will be unemployed. The federal government allows employers to violate immigration laws, tax laws, and minimum wage laws. Politicians, including George Bush, routinely refer to illegal immigrants taking "jobs that Americans don't want". American citizens collect garbage, clean out bed pans, and clean toilets. They used to work as cooks and dishwashers in restaurants. Politicians fail to explain exactly what jobs Americans don't want when the unemployment rate is over 5%. The fact is that an employer must pay minimum wage, and often other fees, when hiring a citizen or legal immigrant. The cost of an illegal immigrant is a fraction of that. It is unreasonable to require employers to pay a minimum wage to Americans, while paying less to illegal immigrants.
COSTS FOR US TAXPAYERS
The INS does not have the staff necessary to track them or deport them. In some parts of the county they make up as much as 28% of the population. In some prison systems as many as 24% of the prisoners are immigrants, causing tremendous taxpayer expense.
The estimated annual costs of illegal immigration to U.S. taxpayers are approximately:
-education-$8 billion
-imprisonment for crimes-$1.5 billion
-welfare-$6 billion
-food stamps-$7 billion
-health care-$1.4 billion
and these costs are growing.
CRIME AND TERRORISM
Unlike citizens and legal immigrants, illegal aliens are not registered or identified. Those who are criminals cannot be easily identified as citizens and legal aliens can be. Recent illegal immigrants have included serial killer Angel Recendiz and 9/11 terrorists Hani Hanjour and Khalid Almihdar. Dangerous gangs in the U.S. include illegal immigrants from a myriad of countries.
As long as America leaves open the flood gates of illegal immigration we are vulnerable to more terrorists attacks. Only a few terrorists need to be among the thousands of undocumented immigrants who enter the US every week to create serious threats to our security. Border states in Mexico are largely controlled by criminal organizations, which makes it easier for criminals to enter the U.S.
JOBS
Job seeking legal immigrants face a myriad of federal restrictions on their employment not faced by illegal aliens. They must get approval and pay thousands of dollars to remain in the country. They are prevented from taking jobs unless they have been offered to citizens first. Further, they cannot be paid less than is offered to an American citizen. The objective of this policy is to ensure that immigrants actually do take jobs that Americans do not want. This law is not implemented for illegal alliens.
Illegal immigration is unfair to American citizens and to the immigrants who go to great lengths to enter this country legally. As with other countries, the US needs to document all of its visitors.
WHO BENEFITS FROM ILLEGAL IMMIGRATIONS?
Major corporations and rich business people are the only beneficiaries and the primary beneficiaries are rich farmers and corporate owned factory farms.
American citizens pay the taxes that support illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants frequently live in squalid conditions and work for wages below poverty. America workers lose jobs to illegal immigrants.
SOLUTIONS
Employers who hire illegal immigrants must be prosecuted under existing immigration law. U.S. politicians prevent these laws from being enforced.
Farm subsidies must be eliminated to allow Mexican farmers to succeed and hire Mexican workers. At this time U.S. taxpayers allow corporate farmers in the United States to sell corn for less than cost. As a result we sell corn to Mexico for less than Mexican farmers can grow corn. Who wins? Since the workers growing the corn in the U.S. are Mexican immigrants the only winners are the corporate farmers. Eliminating these subsidies would allow Mexican workers to stay in Mexico.
Our federal, state, and local governments need to establish, and implement, a plan which registers all foreign workers. Illegal immigration is supported by powerful lobbies that spend millions of dollars a year to influence legislators. Without comparable opposition these groups will continue to expand the threat of uncontrolled immigration.
These groups include:
-businesses seeking to cut costs by replacing residents with undocumented workers;
-some immigration attorneys;
-some corrupt INS employees;
-slave traders;
Every hour hundreds of additional illegal immigrants enter the US and add even more power to the groups supporting them. These groups are often funded by the companies that benefit by the illegal immigration. Concerned citizens and legal immigrants must be proactive to compete with the power and money of groups that support illegal immigrants. It would be far better for immigrants to pay fees to the US government and be registered and protected than to pay illegal and immoral handlers.
