DANGER FOR CHILDREN IN THE KITCHEN
When dealing with appliances, the most important rip-off can be an accident. Hundreds of children are severely burned each year because of pots on stoves that are turned so that their handles protrude in front of the stove while being heated. It is important, from the first day a person starts cooking to turn the handles in over the stove or counter when they are left alone so that children don't grab the handles.

BUYING NEW APPLIANCES
Most appliances should last over 10 years. If they don't, consider other brands when you replace them. Most experts believe that an appliance should be replaced when the cost of repair is 50% of the cost of a new replacement. Factor in the hourly rate for the repair person, any installation charges for a new unit, and any differences in taxes. Also consider differences in energy efficiency.

EUREKA ® FAILS TO HONOR WARRANTY*
I purchased a Eureka ® 4D vacuum cleaner with a one year warranty in March 2005. I did not like it because it fell over easily. The beater bar would also frequently stop working. After just eight months it quit working completely. On October 31, 2005, I took it to an authorized Eureka repair center. On November 29, I called Eureka ® to find out why the part that the repair center needed had not arrived. A person who identified himself as Mike, at Eureka ® customer service, told me that the part had been backordered and that they had no idea when it would be available. As a result, I bought another vacuum cleaner (not a Eureka ® ). On December 12, I called the office of Eureka's ® regional manager who told me that the part that I needed had arrived from the country of origin that day. I was told that the repair center would get it after it arrived in the U.S. and went through inspection. I am writing this on January 29, 2006, three months after taking my Eureka ® 4D vacuum cleaner to the repair center, and I still have not received my Eureka ® 4D vacuum cleaner. If I would not have purchased a new vacuum cleaner I would have not had a vacuum cleaner during the entire three month holiday season.

I have never experienced a situation where a product failed under warranty and the manufacturer totally ignored the situation. I have made calls to their parts department, customer service department and regional manager. No one can tell me when the part for my Eureka ® 4D vacuum cleaner will arrive. During my last conversation with them I was told that I needed to wait my turn and that other people had been waiting longer. This is absolutely ridiculous. Parts like this are not hand made. They are manufactured in quantity. All of the parts for backorders should ship together.

Editor's note: We have written to the president of Eureka ® and the President of Electrolux, which owns Eureka ®, and included a copy of this web page. There has been no response, which is extremely unusual. We have never had a credible company fail to respond to a complaint before. We have now purchased www.eurekasucks.com and we are soliciting other comments about Eureka ® for that site.
